Hair wigs are hair pieces made of human hair, horse hair, or any other synthetic material. Wig is the shorten form for periwig, an English word that made its appearance for the first time in 1675. Fashion has made an impact on wigs. Wigs have been used in the theatre as part of a costume. Even the circus has found a place for the human hair wigs where clowns don them as part of their act. Today there are fun wigs and the brightly hued wigs can be seen at sports events and carnivals.
They can be traced as far back as ancient Egypt. They were worn by the Egyptians to protect their heads from the sun. Most of them had shaved heads but those who had hair still wore a wig. The Greeks and Romans too wore wigs. They were considered mainly of Western origin but in China and Japan they have been used for the theatre. The Geisha girls too wear a human hair lace wigs and those in India too wear them in order to lengthen their hair.
After their initial appearance, the usage of the wigs was in abeyance for a number of years until its revival in the 1700s when it was used to cover baldness and presumably enhance ones appearance. It was also a necessity because during this time people were very unhygienic and the infestation of head lice was prevalent. Most shaved their heads and donned the easily manageable human hair wigs .
From then onwards the wigs underwent many changes in style.The wigs were considered an important make up of a man's dress and the wearing denoted their social status.
