Name: FLCL (Fooly Cooly or Furi Kuri)
Genre: Action/Sci-Fi
Anime: 6 Episodes
Manga: 2 Mangas, by Hajime Ueda
Main Characters
Nandaba Naota: A 6th grade elementary student, Naota is caught in the middle of the whole scheme of things, rendering him helpless as Mamimi and Haruko have their way with him. Mamimi tends to do more “physical” things, while Haruko likes to rip things out of his head. He is a confused boy, trying to be an adult when he’s still just a kid. His feelings are strong though, and he tries to make sense of it all.
Samejima Mamimi: A high-school girl, she used to be the girlfriend of Naota’s brother, Taskun. When he moved to America to be a baseball player however, she could do nothing but play “games” with Naota. She is an odd girl that is very dangerous, much like a fuse ready to be lit.
Haruhara Haruko: A mysterious young woman who comes into the series by running over Naota with her vespa, she is a major character in this series. Throughout her time on Earth, Naota learns of her strange history and background. She doesn’t appear to belong, and is constantly beating Naota with her guitar, forcing a strange growth every time.
Canti: A mechanical robot approximately eight feet tall, Canti was named by Mamimi when it sprung from Naota’s head. He doesn’t talk much, but is willing to fight by Naota’s side and give him the extra-boost needed to take on great foes. Ironically, the enemies they face are coming from the same place Canti did, from Naota’s head.
Introduction
When a strange vespa-riding woman smashes into a young boy called Naota on the side of the road, the boy’s life is turned upside-down. The casual “games” he used to play with a high-school girl named Mamimi are now over because of the intruding vespa woman, and he can’t seem to get rid of her. When all seems lost, a giant robot comes out of Naota’s head, lending a helping hand in some way or another.
What will you see?
Among the things you will see in Furi Kuri are the elements of action, sci-fi, and humor. While some of the action may be too fast-paced, and the humor is among the most bizarre kind ever seen by man, it has a genuine story if you look deep enough.
Should your kids watch?
Violence – Furi Kuri has some pretty graphic violence, involving blood at times, and some pretty crazy fights. Viewer discretion is sometimes advised, and the violence deserves a rating of intermediate. It’s way less violent than a PG-13 movie though.
Nudity – There is only brief nudity in episode 5, and you will find some pretty risqué stuff here. The butt scene alone gives this a rating of intermediate.
Language – There is little to no language in the show, giving it the rating of super-low.
Sexuality – There’s some pretty risky stuff here, and I’m surprised they even dare air it on Cartoon Network. Viewer discretion is advised, for the rating of intermediate-extreme.
That's pretty much the take on FLCL there. A strange show with strange characters, but overall a mindblowing experience
