Genre: mostly fantasy, comedy, some romance
Anime: 26 episodes
Manga: Natsuki Takaya, about 11 books (not all translated) from Tokyopop
Main Characters
*note: Jyuunishi=Chinese Zodiac
Honda Tohru - the main character of the story, she comes into the Sohma house after her mother dies and takes care of the household for them in exchange for a place to live. However, things get complicated when she finds out about the Sohma family secret - that certain members are part of the Chinese Zodiac and change into their animal forms when hugged by the opposite sex. She's sweet, sincere, and always wants to please others. She misses her mother very much and refers to her many times in the anime.
Sohma Yuki - the mouse/rat of the Jyuunishi and the so-called "'Prince of Kaiwaia High," the school that Tohru, Kyou and he attend. He is intelligent and handsome, but his attitude is as cold as snow, making him very mysterious. He cares about Tohru a lot, because she drew him out of his shell by sincerely becoming his friend. He fights with Kyo a lot.
Sohma Kyo - the cat of the Jyuunishi and the outcast of the Sohma family based on the story of his animal (The mouse had tricked the cat into not coming to a long-ago party, and as a result the cat was punished by being shunned. However he is still part of the Jyuunishi). He's very outgoing and social, but he's also impulsive and has a very quick temper that can only be stopped by Tohru and others he cares about very much. He cares for Tohru because she was the first person in a long time who liked him for who he was. He also fights with Yuki a lot.
Sohma Shigure - the owner of the house that Tohru, Kyou, Yuki, and he live in (meaning he's the most senior of all of them), he's also the dog of the Jyuunishi and a novelist. At times he can be very perverted, or if not, then he becomes something like a great older brother to all of them - fun and joking, but serious when he needs to be.
Introduction
*from the Tokyopop site
"The enigmatic Sohma family shares a great secret, its members are possessed by spirits of the Chinese Zodiac, and when they are hugged by members of the opposite sex, they transform into their Zodiac animal! Tohru Honda, an orphaned high school freshman, is given lodging in the Sohma household in exchange for taking care of household chores. The humble Tohru is quite grateful for the Sohma family's generosity, and the longer she stays with them, the more they realize what a blessing she is in their lives, as well.
"Fruits Basket, the manga, is the basis for the smash-hit runaway anime show of the same name. It is most eagerly-awaited manga series - as voted on by thousands of fans visiting the TOKYOPOP website - in many, many years. "
What will you see?
*some romance between certain charas*
There is some romance hinted at between Tohru and Kyo or, more often, Tohru and Yuki. Perhaps even between the boys and Tohru's friends.
*fluff!*
This anime is very fluffy, and very sweet. To be utterly blunt, it's about a girl who changes lives - about the effects she has on the Sohmas and their view on their "curse." I could watch the whole anime in a day, but I've known people who get sick because of her attitude or because she "coincidentally" changes lives. I happen to like her character... so maybe that's why. But if you get squeamish about sweetness after a while, watch the anime in chunks.
*interesting charas and mature themes*
The anime introduces very interesting characters, including Tohru's friends. One of them is a psychic, the other is a "Yankee," both girls. There are also many interesting and great Jyuunishi! They all have real-life issues that others could relate to, making them very realistic despite the fact that they turn into animals when they're hugged.
Should your kids watch?
Violence-mild and sometimes funny (funny when Kyo and Yuki fight)
Nudity-none
Language- mild, when Kyo gets mad sometimes
Sexuality-none
